Laconic Dialogue Writer

Laconic makes it easy to write dialogue, manage assets and integrate complex narratives directly into your codebase. With a simple point-and-click interface, Laconic lets creators focus on telling great stories, and lets developers focus on building great dialogue systems.

• Built for dialogue: Write, edit and share your dialogue in an approachable set of dialogue bubbles; while managing long and complex stories by structuring your dialogues into discrete scenes.
• Create choices: Handle player choices and narrative branches directly in your dialogue. Create standalone narrative branches, nested branches, and revert back to the main branch as needed.
  
• Use variables: Handle variables like user-selected character names with a simple variable markup.  Export your project with variables already concatenated into your dialogue (for supported languages).
  
• Manage assets: Handle all your dialogue assets directly in Laconic. Build characters with portraits and dialogue sounds, or implement special reactions and voice acting by assigning unique assets for each dialogue box. Easily update and change assets project-wide with only a few clicks.
  
• Smart exports: Export your dialogue directly to JSON, Godot (GDScript), CryEngine (Lua) and GameMaker (GML); or as a traditional film-style script. Note that Laconic exports dialogue in a set data structure, but you still have to implement your own dialogue engine in your game.
  
• Preview dialogue: View your dialogues as they will appear in-game, with the built in dialogue viewer. View dialogue, check portraits and dialogue sounds, and test your player choices.
  
• Write wikis: Build your project’s world, by writing library entries for people, places, events and much more. Easily export and share your wikis, and integrate them into in-game text.
  
• More to come: Laconic is in active development, and we’ll be adding a lot more features in the future. Keep an eye out for a new translation system, support for cloud saves and simultaneous team editing, additional export languages (including support for Unity and Unreal), and more.

BETA NOTICE

Please take note of the following before downloading Laconic:

• Laconic is currently still in beta. While the application has been tested extensively on Windows, errors and bugs may still occur. Please expect some challenges until we reach 1.0.0 in early 2023.
• The Mac and Linux versions have not been fully tested as yet, and are considered experimental. Please expect more bugs on these platforms. 
• Because Laconic is still in ongoing development, Windows and macOS may flag it with an "unknown app" notice when you try to install the app by downloading it directly from the internet. To avoid this, install Laconic with the Itch app, or simply select the "Run anyway" option on the warning message.
• Users can choose their price to purchase Laconic while it is in beta. However, please note that free users may not have access to future releases beyond version 1.0.0.
• We are constantly working to improve Laconic and really appreciate all bug reports and feature suggestions, particularly while the app is still in beta. Please let us know your thoughts at feedback@tielab.dev. We will try respond to all emails within two days.
